Knockouts! Tapouts! Upsets!UFC Fight Night was Ultimate ActionIn the main event of UFC Fight Night 13, in what is being called the greatest “free” card in UFC history, lightweight contender Kenny “Ken-Flo” Florian stopped Joe “J-Lau” Lauzon in the second round of their scheduled three round contest. The first round on Wednesday night’s main event very possibly could prove to be the best round of the year as both Florian and Lauzon were prepared for war. Lauzon and Florian battled in a toe-to-toe war of attrition for much of round one. In the second round however Florian took over by mounting Lauzon and landing a barrage of punches prompting referee Herb Dean to halt the contest at 3:28. The Ultimate Fighter 5 alum Gray Maynard used his superior power and wrestling to outpoint the undefeated Frankie Edgar via unanimous decision in a lightweight contest. Scorecards read the same, 30-27. Top welterweight Thiago "Pitbull" Alves stopped Karo "The Heat" Parysian with a hard Muay Thai knee in the second round of their three round contest. Matt “The Hammer” Hamill bounced back from his controversial split decision loss to Michael Bisping by stopping Tim Boetsch in the second round of a light heavyweight bout. Though Boetsch was still conscious, he was not defending the heavy blows of Hamill. The official time was 1:25. In his toughest challenge to date, The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz submitted the very experienced Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino in the second round with a tight triangle choke in a lightweight matchup. The official time was 3:06. In a light heavyweight superfight James "The Sandman" Irvin knocked out fellow slugger Houston Alexander with a vicious right cross in a record tying 8 seconds. Welterweight Josh “The Dentist” Neer scored a three round unanimous decision over the dangerously experienced Din Thomas. Official scores were the same, 30-27. Former PrideFC star and lightweight contender Marcus Aurelio made quick work of Ryan Roberts in only 16 seconds. Aurelio scored with a devastating right and finished Roberts with a tight armbar. Season Five runner up Manny Gamburyan displayed his technical prowess submitting Jeff Cox with a tight guillotine choke at 1:41 of the opening round of a lightweight bout. All action lightweight Clay “The Carpenter” Guida is back on the winning track after stopping newcomer Samy Schiavo in the first round. While the Schiavo landed hard punches to open the round, the more experienced Guida took his opponent down and overwhelmed him with a flurry of shots. The official time of the stoppage was 4:51. George Sotiropoulos scored a second round TKO over fellow Season Six castmate Roman Mitichyan at 2:24 in a welterweight battle. After controlling his opponent from all positions on the ground, Sotiropoulos rained down hard punches until the contest was stopped by the referee. Welterweight prospect Anthony Johnson opened the night with a bang knocking out Season Six finalist Tommy Speer with a flurry of punches in just :51 seconds. Speer was stunned by a headkick early in the fight and never fully recovered. |
